Naxos History

First - at the antiquity - residents of island were the Thraces and Cretes. They later installed there and Kares, with head Naxos, from who the island was named after. In the historical period the Naxians were Iones from Attica. The first settlers had as head the son of Kodros, Nileas.

Halkidians and Naxians together founded at 734 B.C. the homonym city in Sicily. From the buildings that were built in Delos appear that Naxos was city with acne. This fact is shown also by the eminent Naxian Gate of Lions, again in the Delos. The state of the island was aristocracy. The leading order was constituted by the "thick". The aristocracy was reversed by the democratic Lygdamis (550 - 524), even if he was emanated from "thick". At 501 B.C. the Persians made their first expedition in the Naxos, which failed.

Naxos attractions

PORTARA
The first view of the visitor, before disembarking to the island is that of Portara. The ruins of a temple dedicated to Apollo are preserved around Portara to this day.

IRIA
A sacred place of the Aegean with uninterrupted life and function from the 14th century B.C. up to our times.

DEMETRA TEMPLE
The Temple of goddess Demetra (or Dimitra) dating back to 530 BC in the Sangri area was relatively recently found and refurbished. We suggest to include Sangri village and the temple in your itenerary.

CHIMAROS TOWER
Chimarros tower is a circular marble characteristic four floors construction of Naxos, located between Filoti and Kalandos.

KALAMITSIA
In the street to the village Melanes and in distance of 8 km south –eastern from Chora, is founded the tower of Kalamitsia. It was built on the 17th century and constituted the aestival residence of Jesuit.

BAZEOS TOWER
It is located on the 12th km of the main road linking the Chora of Naxos with the interior. It was built circa 1600 and served as a monastery of the Holy Cross until the beginning of the 19th century, when it was abandoned by the last monks and devolved upon the then emergent Hellenic State.
