PORTARA
The first view of the visitor, before disembarking to the island is that of Portara. The ruins of a temple dedicated to Apollo are preserved around Portara to this day. Its construction started the 6th century BC during the rule of the tyrant of the island Lygdamis, but was never completed because he was exiled by his people in the mean time, after the lost war with the tyrant of Samos.

A lot of people like to connect the temple of Apollo to Dionysos as they don't forget that Naxos is the home of Vakhos and the island where Thisseas deserted Ariadne full of sorrow until she found comfort next to Dionysos.
A lot of the oldest parts of the temple were used by Marko Sanoudo furing the Venetian rule as building materials for the castle.
Above and beyond the archaeological significance of the island of palaces Portara is one of the unique spots of Cyclades for a visitor that wishes to enjoy a magnificent sunset and stare at the surrounding widespread islands of Cyclades.

IRIA
A sacred place of the Aegean with uninterrupted life and function from the 14th century B.C. up to our times. It is the cradle of the Ionic order of the monumental Greek architecture. The sancturay of Iria has been located (1982), investigated (1986-1996) and presented to the public (1992-1996) by the University of Athens in collaboration with the Polytechnical School of Munich, with the financial support of both Univesities as well as the Ministry of Culture (research) and the Ministry of Aegean (presentation).

DEMETRA TEMPLE
The Temple of goddess Demetra (or Dimitra) dating back to 530 BC in the Sangri area was relatively recently found and refurbished. We suggest to include Sangri village and the temple in your itenerary.

CHIMAROS TOWER
Chimarros tower is a circular marble characteristic four floors construction of Naxos, located between Filoti and Kalandos. Its height is about 14 meters. Pyrgos Chimarrou has a great symbolic meaning among local people and it is celebrated in local folk songs. Today it is being restored from the Naxos municipality.

KALAMITSIA
In the street to the village Melanes and in distance of 8 km south –eastern from Chora, is founded the tower of Kalamitsia. It was built on the 17th century and constituted the aestival residence of Jesuit.

BAZEOS TOWER
It is located on the 12th km of the main road linking the Chora of Naxos with the interior. It was built circa 1600 and served as a monastery of the Holy Cross until the beginning of the 19th century, when it was abandoned by the last monks and devolved upon the then emergent Hellenic State. In the late 19th century it was purchased by the Bazeos (Basegio) family, to whose descendants it belongs until today.

Since 2000 exhibitions are organized in the tower’s interior, while the FESTIVAL OF NAXOS, which includes concerts, theatrical performances and cultural activities, is organized in the forecourt from July to September. In 2008 the thematic axis of Festival is “Art and Madness”. Email: info@bazeostower.gr - Ôel. 0030 22850-31402 (Naxos), 0030 210 7258741 (Athens).
